What is a men's shed?

Men’s Sheds started in Australia in the late 1990s as a way to give men a place to meet, create, and support one another — especially after retirement. The idea quickly spread across Ireland, where sheds have become an important part of local communities.

Why Join a Men's Shed?

There are many reasons to join a men’s shed. If you are someone who, after retiring (though not exclusively limited to retirees), still has a lot to offer, you might want to share your skills with other men. Or if you have found yourself in need of a friend, there are countless reasons for joining a shed. Men's Sheds provide an ideal environment for the promoting and fostering of positive mental health leading to an improvement in overall health and wellbeing.
01
The heart of the Shed is the people. It’s a space to swap stories, share a laugh, and check in with each other over a cup of tea. You’ll find plenty of good conversation and new friendships along the way.
02
Beyond the Shed, members often lend their skills and energy to local projects. It’s a great way to give back, feel connected to the town, and take pride in contributing to the community together.
03
Whether it’s woodwork, gardening, or fixing things up, there’s always a project to get involved in. It doesn’t matter if you’re experienced or just starting out — the Shed is a place to learn, share, and enjoy working with your hands.
04
The Shed provides a vital sense of routine and purpose that extends beyond your average hobby. Working on meaningful projects is a powerful way to keep the mind sharp, boost your mental health, and actively combat isolation.
